This canvas, that features a pale blue rectangle in its upper area, is criss-crossed by a seam that resembles a scar produced when the artist sewed two pieces of linen together. In this subtle and at once coarse composition, Gallo emphasises the material nature of the medium and makes it tangible, as if it were a sensitive and vulnerable skin. This artist's oeuvre is also striking for its extraordinarily sophisticated references to art, ranging from the abstract painting of Mark Rothko and Cy Twombly to the existential anguish expressed in the works by Joseph Beuys. The canvas rests on a chair on which Gallo has painted the words Zeige deine Wunde (Show Your Wound), a clear reference to the installation of the same name that Joseph Beuys produced in Munich in 1974.
