From the early nineties onwards, Tillmans has been creating an encyclopaedic lexicon of images with which he examines formal aspects of photography, both as a technique and as an object, yet painting has always been exemplary in his work. This composition, precisely, can be interpreted as a tribute to painting, for it represents classical genre – still lifes, portraits and landscapes – and the concept of abstraction. The four images create a discursive visual space that also confers a new type of subjectivity to photography.
