So lazy: in praise of waste

27/11/2020 - 23/05/2021

CaixaForum Barcelona

Sooooo Lazy: In Praise of Waste takes its cue from Georges Bataille’s notion of consumption, whereby the economy is driven not by production and consumption but by wasteful spending. Accepting waste as a necessary fact of life and resolving to spend time in different ways means doing less work and coming up with an alternative approach to life that gives laziness its due appreciation and recognition.

By imagining a world that yearns to waste time instead of employing it productively, a society that would rather destroy wealth than create it, the show offers a critique of our contemporary hyperactivity and hints at a possible redistribution of resources and time as the first step to rethinking our habits. It brings together work in a range of formats—including painting, photography, installation, video and sculpture—by artists such as Priscila Fernandes, Ángela Ferreira, Alberto Gil Cásedas, Sharon Lockhardt, Agnes Martin, Aernout Mik, Agustín Parejo School and Xavier Ribas, among others.

Curated by Beatriz Escudero and Francesco Giaveri, the exhibition forms part of the Call for Curators programme.
