ART, TWO POINTS
18/07/2013 - 29/12/2013
CaixaForum Barcelona
A major exhibition of works drawn from the collections of Fundación "la Caixa" and the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) is now under way in Barcelona.
The exhibition presents new narratives about our culture, drawing connections between works of art, historical periods, and multiple themes, and building a bridge between CaixaForum and MACBA. The main focus is on exploring the concept of modernism and its relationship to the avant-garde in the context of our history, which was marked by traumatic interruptions and by Spain's peripheral status in relation to the major centres of twentieth-century culture. A broad selection of works from the two collections offers an insight into how we have reached this present and how we could imagine the future.
At CaixaForum the exhibition centres on the institutionalisation of the artistic avant-garde and the internationalisation of the art scene in Spain from the 1980s on. In that decade, Fundación "la Caixa" acquired the first works in its collection of international art. Among these pieces, the installations by Joseph Beuys and Jannis Kounellis connect with the existentialist spirit of the post-war period and form a conceptual link to later works included in the collection. Taking this context as its point of departure, the show constructs a narrative that juxtaposes Beuys' symbolism with the anti-idealism of Mike Kelley (who advocated the perception of the world through the body as an agent of knowledge), presenting a series of works that address issues of identity, difference and vulnerability. The exhibition include some fifty works by artists such as Miroslaw Balka, Tonet Amorós, Ferran García Sevilla, Antoni Tàpies, Bruce Nauman, Felix González Torres, Robert Gober, John Bock, Thomas Hirschhorn, Pepe Espaliú and Martin Kippenberger.
