This painting belongs to the series ‘Entre cuatro paredes’ presented in 1985 at the Juana de Aizpuru gallery in Madrid, which brought García Sevilla his first critical triumph. The ‘Muca’ series includes about thirty paintings characterised by the incorporation of graffiti-like texts. The texts are radical, ironic or sarcastic and offer an aggressive response to the penchant for theorising about painting that was so typical at the time. With these ideas or slogans—phrases like Uno se lo cree a fuerza de repetirlo [You believe it if you’ve heard it often enough] or Descubres el secreto seguro que te deprimes [If you discover the secret you’re sure to get depressed]—he is emphasising the fact that it is up to the public to develop their own theory. The register of the texts is varied, ranging from metaphysics and self-destructive or countercultural provocation to social criticism aimed at the art world.
