1969
Acrylic on Masonite

The artwork combines iconographic elements from several paintings by two great Spanish painters. First and foremost Goya, whose work informs the huddle of terrified people, a small shapeless mass of ghostly faces, with three carnations in shrill red graphically spattered across them, and an armband of the Spanish flag adding an anachronistic element. The other reference is Picasso, whose dramatic light bulb from the painting Guernica (1937) is inserted here as though it were a pop element.
