Much of the work realised by Equipo Crónica focuses on a reappraisal, at times ironic, of the great Spanish painters, from Goya to Picasso.
At the same time, this reinterpretation is an action that serves to demystify the history of art and its ‘masterpieces’ as well as being a parody of the circumstances that make up our collective visual memory.
The painting draws on Picasso’s popular work Guernica (1937) as a symbolic and thematic element while transforming it into an object that only allows the spectator to see one of its corners.
The concealment of the artwork could be read as a reference to the censorship practiced at the time. The title, however, also implies a different kind of invisibility: that of the art world’s ‘backstage’ with its conservation mechanisms and classification systems, a world that unfolds behind the scenes and is never visible to the spectator.
