Rhode uses a variety of visual languages (photography, drawing, animation, performance) to create evocative narratives like the one he has drawn here in chalk. Cinema, hip-hop and the aesthetic of street art, as well as the colourful murals of his hometown, are influences on his work. Much like a storyboard, his illusionistic narrative takes us back to early cinema, when cinema was silent, black and white: a man, his face concealed, is working a sewing machine from which a long brick wall emerges as the person gradually disappears. With a great sense of humour, the vignettes reveal the fine line between the real and the illusive.
