The works by Liu Jianhuaanalyse the state of culture in contemporary China, immersed in a frenzied race to modernisation brought about by the effects of globalisation. This work depicts the skylines of the large cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou in white porcelain, projecting their shadows as if they were reflected in a mirror of water. The reflection is perfect, but always fleeting. An attentive gaze soon discovers that the buildings are bent, as if their architectural structures had no foundations and they were unable to remain standing; as if they were invertebrate figures-mere reflections of the West.
