The fact that both his father and his mother were psychiatrists meant that Javier Téllez (Valencia, Venezuela, 1969) had frequent contact with the mentally ill. As he himself has stated, this proximity helped him dissolve the divisions between what is considered normal and pathological. In his artistic practice he challenges the role played by mental health institutions as links in the system of social exclusion that objectify and stigmatise difference from the norm. The characters in most of his works are patients in psychiatric hospitals whom the artist invited to take part in a process of collective and collaborative creation that often led to the making of a film.
