Along with Fernando Zóbel and Gerardo Rueda, Gustavo Torner founded the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca in 1966, which strove to present the leading, international art trends of the time. At first, Gustavo Torner (Cuenca, 1925) adhered to the trends inspired by Art Informel until fully embracing the language of abstraction in the mid-sixties. The work he created during this decade is characterised by formal experimentation of great plastic depth with combinations of materials and textures such as nylon, synthetic leather, metal or cardboard. During the seventies, he completed important works of public art. The installations contain marked references to stage design, but are always based on the principles of geometric simplicity. Torner also had an important career in the theatre, where he created a variety of different stage designs, and he has significantly contributed to the restoration of museum spaces like the Museo del Prado and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
